Why Aren’t AR-10 Parts Universal?

Back in the day, when wood furniture was still the standard for American hunting rifles, Eugene Stoner designed the AR-10. It was a revolutionary leap forward, representing a fundamental rethinking of what a military rifle could be. Where contemporary designs like the M14 and FN FAL treated heavy steel construction and traditional stock geometry as givens, Stoner treated them as problems to be solved. By combining an aluminum receiver, composite furniture, an inline stock to tame recoil, and a rotating bolt that locked directly into the barrel extension, Stoner produced a rifle that was lighter, more controllable, and just as durable as its heavier peers. However, during U.S. military testing, ArmaLite President George Sullivan insisted on using a composite barrel made of aluminum and steel—overriding Stoner’s strong objections. This choice proved disastrous. During Army endurance tests, the composite barrel suffered a sudden, spectacular burst, causing the military to lose interest in the platform.
Consequently, despite limited adoption by a few countries like Portugal and Sudan, the AR-10 never gained the massive global footprint of the FN FAL. The platform’s missing evolutionary link finally arrived in the early 1990s when Eugene Stoner partnered with Knight’s Armament Company to create the SR-25. This rifle revived the .308 AR architecture and introduced a highly reliable, straight-walled magazine that was later adopted by the U.S. military.
In 2004, Defense Procurement Manufacturing Services (commonly known as DPMS Panther Arms) capitalized on this revived interest by launching the LR-308. Because DPMS had to build all of their manufacturing tooling from scratch, they took the opportunity to modernize the geometry, building their new commercial standard around the proven SR-25 magazine. This "DPMS pattern" quickly became the open-source, de facto civilian standard for the modern .308 AR.
