For extra guidance on the fore-end of your AR-15, hand stops were developed in multiple different designs. This usually incorporates a hard stop wall for your hand to not extend past the muzzle, a finger groove to index your fingers properly on your handguard, or an aggressive slanted surface to brace against barriers and obstacles.
