An 80% lower receiver is exactly what its name states, a lower receiver that is 80% complete. By leaving a lower receiver 80 percent finished it is not viewed as a complete firearm so it can be shipped to most states without the need for a background check. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to complete the lower receiver.

80% lowers come in a variety of materials from forged 6061-T6 aluminum forgings, 7075-T6 aluminum billets, to injected molded polymer.

80% lowers can be purchased in a variety of platforms including AR-15, LR-308/AR-10, and Glock compatible 80% frames.

Some of these 80% lowers come with tools such as jigs and bits, in the case they do not you can find a selection of tools and jigs that Delta Team Tactical carries that can be purchased to complete your 80% build project.

What is an 80% Lower Receiver?

An 80 percent lower is not deemed a firearm by ATF standards. Commonly the 80 percent is what ATF will allow being the most complete, without considering it a firearm. Whichever model you go for, once you have begun the process of drilling your 80% is now considered a firearm even if you are only at 85 or 90 percent complete.


What is an 80% Lower Receiver?

The lower receiver of an AR-15 is the lower half of the AR. The lower receiver is the part that the serial number is listed, essentially is that part of the AR 15 that makes it a firearm. An 80% lower receiver is an AR-15 lower receiver that is only 80% complete, requiring the purchaser to complete it on their own. As a result of it being incomplete, there is no serial number and no need for a background check because it is not considered a complete firearm.


Types of 80% Lowers?

There are a variety of 80% lower receivers. Starting with the different platforms there are 80% AR-15 lower receivers, these will work with all AR 15 upper receivers that are on the market (unless there is something proprietary about either the upper or the lower).

Moving on to the larger calibers there are 80% LR-308’s often referred to as an AR-10. While there are some subtle differences between the two platforms, they are very similar, but certain parts are not compatible between AR-10 and LR-308. When considering doing an LR-308 build take special precautions that your upper receiver will be compatible with your 80% LR 308 lower.

In recent years the 80% Glock compatible frames have become increasingly popular, these can be purchased in a variety of calibers, sizes, and most importantly colors.

What materials are 80% lowers made from?

80% lowers are usually made from either polymer or Aluminum. One of the advantages of polymer 80% lowers or frames is they usually come with the jigs and bits necessary to complete them. The aluminum 80 percent lowers comes in both forged and billet construction.


Building Processes for an 80% Lower?

The process is relatively simple in concept, the purchaser drills the necessary holes and mills out the remainder of the material that needs to be removed to complete the lower into a complete firearm.


What parts are needed to complete your 80% Lower?

For the AR-15 and LR-308 models to compete an 80% lower a lower-parts- kit (LPK) is needed as well as a buffer tube kit. A stock or pistol brace is also needed depending on what type of firearm is being built. If the purchaser is uncertain what parts are needed and compatible with each other a Finish Your Build Kit can be purchased with all the needed parts. Once this is done it can be mated with a built-out upper receiver and is ready to take to the range.

For the Glock compatible products, a frame parts kit is needed to complete the frame. Once the frame is completed it can then be paired with a built-out slide.


What tools are needed or recommended to complete an 80% lower?

There are many correct answers to this. An obvious one is drill bits of the appropriate sizes and a jig to ensure the holes are lined up correctly. A common pairing to the drill bits is also a power drill. Other tools that are commonly used are routers with bits as well as files. For those who are more sophisticated a CNC machine such as a Ghost Gunner can be used to do the majority of the finishing. Keep in mind if a billet 80 percent is purchased these may not be compatible with the jigs and/or the CNC machine and therefore additional tools and work may be required to complete it.

Is it legal to build an AR with an 80% lower?

According to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) is legal for an individual to manufacture a firearm for personal use. If the intent is to sell the firearms that are manufactured then a Federal Firearms License (FFL) is required. So currently it is legal (in most states) to build an 80% lower into a complete firearm for personal use.

"No, a license is not required to make a firearm solely for personal use. However, a license is required to manufacture firearms for sale or distribution. The law prohibits a person from assembling a non–sporting semiautomatic rifle or shotgun from 10 or more imported parts, as well as firearms that cannot be detected by metal detectors or x-ray machines. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and advance approval by ATF.
