AR-15 & AR-10 Handguards: How to Choose the Right Free-Float Rail

Your handguard is where your support hand lives and where your light, laser, sling, and grip mount. The right handguard also improves accuracy. A free-float handguard never touches the barrel, so pressure from your hand, a sling, or a bipod can't push the barrel off target. Delta Team Tactical carries AR-15 and AR-10 handguards, including Davidson Defense rails, in a range of lengths and attachment systems, with the fit and mounting details listed on every product page.

1. Free-Float vs. Drop-In

• Free-float handguards attach only to the upper receiver through their own barrel nut. They offer the best accuracy, a continuous top rail, and the most space for accessories. They're the standard choice for modern builds.
• Drop-in handguards install without tools, held in place by the delta ring and handguard cap. They touch the barrel, so they don't give the accuracy benefit of free-float, but they keep a traditional look and work with fixed front sight bases.

2. Choose an Attachment System

3. Get the Length Right

Handguard length should fit your barrel length, gas system, and muzzle device. A longer handguard gives you more grip room and a longer sight radius, but it should end before your muzzle device, and leave clearance if you run a suppressor or a device you'll need to wrench on and off.

These are common pairings, not hard rules. Measure your barrel from the front of the upper receiver to the base of your muzzle device before ordering.

4. Check Gas Block and Sight Compatibility

A free-float handguard slides over the gas block, so you'll need a low-profile gas block that fits under it. A traditional A2-style front sight base won't fit under most free-float handguards. If you want to keep one, choose a handguard short enough to end behind it. Many shooters pair a free-float rail with folding backup sights mounted on the continuous top rail.

5. Platform, Barrel Nut, and Weight

• AR-15 handguards fit standard mil-spec AR-15 upper receivers. Most free-float models use their own proprietary barrel nut, which is usually included, so check what's in the box.
• AR-10 handguards must match your upper receiver pattern. AR-10 uppers are not standardized between manufacturers, so confirm the handguard is made for your upper's pattern (such as DPMS-style) before ordering.
• Material and weight: most handguards are machined from aircraft-grade aluminum with a hard-anodized finish. Slim M-LOK designs and lightening cuts keep weight down on long rails.

Installing a free-float handguard means removing the factory barrel nut and torquing the new one to spec with the correct wrench. If you're not comfortable doing that, a gunsmith can install it quickly.

Complete Your Front End

A handguard works together with the parts around it. Pair it with the right barrel, a matched muzzle device, and M-LOK and rail accessories like hand stops, grips, light mounts, and sling points.
